Another game of Gukesh-Liren ended in a draw

Both players are tied at 4.5-4.5 points

Another game of the World Championship Chess between India’s D Gukesh and China’s Ding Liren ended in a draw. The Indian Grandmaster could not pose any threat to Liren despite playing with white pieces in the ninth round. Both played a draw in 54 moves. This is the sixth consecutive and seventh game between the two that ended in a draw. Liren won the first game and Gukesh won the third. Both players are tied at 4.5-4.5 points. Now there are five rounds left in the tournament, in which Liren has to play with white pieces in three rounds. The one who scores 7.5 points first will be the winner. If both remain tied even after 14 rounds, then a tiebreaker will be used, in which some matches of short duration will be held.

Tried Catalan Opening

Gukesh resorted to Catalan Opening which has been used at the top level for decades with white pieces. Like always, here too Liren took a lot of time to deal with the opening. While Gukesh took 15 minutes in the first 14 moves, Liren took 50 minutes. Gukesh got a chance to put pressure on Liren in the 20th move, but Liren did not let Gukesh take advantage with his excellent moves. During this time, Liren was behind by 30 minutes, but despite the time pressure, he played the right moves and brought the match to a draw. During this time Gukesh used his extra time. In the 23rd move, he lagged behind Liren in terms of time. After the 24th move it was decided that the match would be a draw and in the end it happened the same way.
