Aamir Ali: From Mechanic’s Son to Hockey Star, Eyes Glory in HIL

Aamir Ali, a 20-year-old hockey prodigy, has turned his family’s financial struggles into a story of inspiration and triumph. The son of a motorcycle mechanic, Aamir recently led India to a record fifth Junior Asia Cup title as team captain. Now, brimming with confidence, he aims to shine in the Hockey India League (HIL) and fulfill his dream of playing for the senior national team.

A Journey Fueled by Determination

Aamir’s journey has been anything but easy. Growing up in a financially strained household, he often walked over 10 kilometers just to watch his idol, former Indian captain Manpreet Singh, play hockey. Today, Aamir finds himself on the same team as Manpreet in the upcoming HIL season, representing Team Gonasika, who purchased him for ₹34 lakh at the 2024-25 auction.

Reflecting on his journey, Aamir said, “During my teenage years, I felt embarrassed by my father’s job as a bike mechanic. But as I grew older, I realized the value of hard work and sacrifice. It was my family’s struggles that inspired me to pursue hockey and make a better life for them. Now, I want to make my family and my country proud.”

From Junior Asia Cup to HIL

Leading India to victory in the Junior Asia Cup has been a turning point for Aamir. “Winning the Junior Asia Cup has boosted my confidence,” he said. “I want to carry this momentum into the HIL, give my best, and contribute to my team’s success. My ultimate dream is to represent India in the senior team.”

Playing Alongside His Idol

Aamir is particularly excited to share the field with Manpreet Singh, captain of India’s bronze-medal-winning team at the Tokyo Olympics. “To think that I once walked miles to watch a HIL match and now I’m part of it—it’s a dream come true,” he said. “Playing with my idol, Manpreet, is a special feeling. I’m eager to learn from him and give my best under his guidance.”

Eyes on the Future

As Aamir gears up for his HIL debut, he carries not only the weight of his own aspirations but also the hopes of his family and fans. With talent, determination, and the support of his team, he is ready to leave his mark on Indian hockey.
