The 18-year-old Gukesh won the Tata Steel Masters this year, led India to a gold medal in the Chess Olympiad, shone in the Candidates Tournament and won the World Championship title in Singapore last week. “I am delighted to once again face one of the strongest players in the world in Norway. It will be fun,” Gukesh said in a statement.
Gukesh finished third here last year, but this time as the reigning world champion he will challenge Carlsen on his home ground. “This match will be spectacular. It will be interesting to see how the world champion faces the number one player. The whole world will be watching,” said Kjell Madland, founder and tournament director of Norwegian Chess. Norway Chess will feature the world’s best men and women players in a 6 player double round robin format.
