Hampi wins World Rapid Chess Championship title for the second time

Hampi has won the World Rapid Chess Championship title held in Georgia in the year 2019

India’s Koneru Humpy has won the World Rapid Chess Championship title for the second time. In this tournament played in New York, Hampi defeated Irene Sukhander of Indonesia in the final. Earlier, Hampi had won this championship held in Georgia in the year 2019. India’s No. 1 player is the second player after China’s Xu Wenjun to win the title more than once. The 37-year-old Humpy finished the tournament with 8.5 points out of 11.

Russia’s Volodar Murzin won the men’s title

Russia’s 18-year-old Volodar Murzin won the men’s title. Murzin is the second youngest player to win the FIDE World Rapid Champion. Before him, Nodirbek Abdusattorov had won the title at the age of 17.

Hampi has had better performance in this tournament

Hampi has had a better performance in this tournament. Apart from becoming champion twice, he also won the silver medal in this tournament held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan last year. He won the bronze medal in this event held in Moscow in 2012.

India’s better performance in chess this year

India’s performance in chess this year has been better. De Gukesh had defeated China’s Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in the World Chess Championship final on 12 December. Gukesh is the first player in the world to win the title at such a young age. Earlier in 1985, Russia’s Garry Kasparov had won this title at the age of 22.

In the Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, Hungary in September, India won the historic gold medal in the Open and Women’s categories. For the first time in the 97-year history of the Olympiad, India secured first place in both the categories. In the open category of the 11th round, India defeated Slovenia 3.5-0.5. At the same time, the women’s team defeated Azerbaijan in the last round by a margin of 3.5-0.5.
