The young cyclist suffered a serious road accident that ended his life and that of another person involved in the accident. Miel Dekien had stood out in the lower categories.
The young Belgian cyclist Miel Dekien, aged just 18, died on Saturday after a fatal traffic accident , according to his team. Dieken had managed to make a difference in the lower categories and was one of the most promising talents in Belgian cyclocross.
“It is with great sadness and incomprehension that we inform you of the passing of our racer Miel Dekien (2006-2024) as a result of a tragic traffic accident. You will always remain in our hearts Miel, we will never forget you and we are grateful for the many beautiful moments together, you were and will continue to be a fantastic guy for us,” began the statement from the Ostend Air College.
“Our deepest condolences to parents, family, friends and everyone who loved Miel. We are at a loss for words… wherever you are now, we wish you the best ,” Ostend Air College, her team, posted on their social media.

According to information shared by local authorities, the accident occurred in Beerst, near Diksmuide (in West Flanders) and another young man of the same age died. Shortly after the news broke, it was the Belgian cycling team that reacted to this tragic news.
