Golfer Grayson Murray dies at 30 during PGA Tour tournament

The American golfer was competing in the Charles Schwab Challenge this week, but withdrew during the tournament. He had had serious problems with alcohol in the past.

Mourning in the golf world. Grayson Murray, a 30-year-old American golfer, died unexpectedly this Saturday , as confirmed by the PGA Tour in a note published on its official website. The player from North Carolina was competing this week in the Charles Schwab Challenge, although he decided to withdraw from the tournament when he was about to finish his second round, with only two holes left to play, and after making five bogeys without birdies in his round.

” We are devastated to learn of this and are heartbroken to share it: PGA Tour golfer Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. ” The PGA Tour is a family and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We are mourning Grayson and praying for the comfort of his loved ones.”

” I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences and during that conversation they asked me to continue with the tournament. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it is, we want to respect his wishes,” he concluded, without giving further details about the cause of the death of the golfer, who this season had won the Sony Open in Hawaii .

He had drinking problems

A native of North Carolina, Murray played alongside Spaniard Jon Rahm at Arizona State, with whom he shared the course on the third day of the last Masters in Augusta, held in April. Murray, who turned professional in 2015, had problems with alcohol, as he himself admitted on occasion and for which he entered a detoxification center.

At the 2022 Bermuda Championship, he had an accident while driving a scooter that almost cost him his life. A year earlier, Murray had a fight in a bar at the Waialae hotel, for which he had to testify before the PGA Tour officials before being released on parole. “Why was I drunk? Because I’m a fucking alcoholic who hates everything to do with life on the PGA Tour and that’s my escape life,” he once said.

At the 2023 Mexican Open, she drank again before going out to play. “I shot 79. I came home and had an anxiety attack that lasted four days . It was the worst feeling I’ve ever had; I never wanted to go through that again and it was the last time I had a drink ,” she confessed.
