The retirement phase in international cricket has been going on. Virat Kohli left Test cricket after Rohit Sharma. Sri Lankan Angelo Mathews also announced his retirement. Now Australian star all -rounder Glenn Maxwell has decided to retire from ODI cricket. The 36 -year -old Maxwell made an ODI debut for Australia in 2012. He was also part of the 2015 and 2023 World Cup team, though T20 will continue to play international matches.
Maxwell played a memorable innings in the World Cup In the World Cup 2023, Glenn Maxwell played one of the best innings of ODI history against Afghanistan. Australia had a target of 292 runs to win at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Seven batters of the team were dismissed for 91 runs. The defeat was visible from here, but then the Maxwell storm came. He played an unbeaten 2018 off 128 balls. He could not even run because of the hamstring. Even then Maxwell led the team to victory.
The mind was made during the Champions Trophy Glenn Maxwell made up his mind to leave ODIs in March. During the Champions Trophy, he told Australian chief selector George Bailey that he did not think he could play 2027 World Cup. Maxwell said- I think the time is now that the players who are waiting for my place should start planning for it. Try to take advantage of this opportunity and make this place for the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully they will have enough opportunities in advance, so that they can succeed in that role.
Maxwell took his retirement in a podcast, “I have always said that if I think I was making a similar contribution to my team, I would never leave ODI, but I did not want to play for selfish reasons.” Let me tell you that Maxwell's strike rate is 126, which is the second highest in ODI cricket, he is only behind West Indies giants Andre Russell.
Maxwell said of the decision to retire from ODI, “I felt that I was disappointed with the team, because the body was not reacting according to situations. I (chairman of the selector) spoke to George Belly and reached this decision.”
Glenn Maxwell's One-Day Career Glenn Maxwell played 149 matches in his 13-year ODI career. In the meantime he scored 3390 runs at an average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 126.70. In the meantime he scored 4 centuries and 23 half centuries. He hunted 77 batters in bowling. His best performance is 4 wickets for 40 runs. The semifinals of the Champions Trophy against India were the last match of their one-day career. Akshar Patel was bowled out after Maxwell scored 7 runs in a match played in Dubai on March 4. Maxwell was part of Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, but due to injury it has been dropped from the tournament.
