Former world champion Carlsen has been fined US$200 for wearing jeans

Five-time world chess champion Magnus Carlsen has dropped out of the World Rapid and Blitz Championship. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) issued a notice to him for violating the dress code and also imposed a fine of around 200 US dollars (about 17 thousand rupees).

According to FIDE, the Norwegian chess grandmaster refused to follow the dress code at the World Rapid and Blitz Championship. He has also been declared ineligible for this championship.

“The Chief Arbiter requested Carlsen to change his attire, but he refused,” FIDE said on its official social media handle. So Carlsen has not been added for the ninth round of the tournament.

The federation further said that the decision was taken fairly and applies equally to all chess players. The dress code is set so that all players look the same.

The dress code rules are made by the members of the FIDE Athletes Commission. These rules have been in place for years and all chess players are informed about them before the tournament.
