Gukesh Becomes Youngest Chess World Champion at 18

Gukesh’s Journey

Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh, who became the youngest World Chess Champion at the age of 18, shared his thoughts in an exclusive interview. Speaking about his journey, Gukesh credited his success to his parents, his team, and his inspiration, chess legend Viswanathan Anand. He also encouraged young players to embrace the joy of the game.

On Thursday, Gukesh defeated defending champion Ding Liren of China in the 14th game of the final, clinching the World Chess Championship title with a score of 7.5–6.5. This victory made him the 18th World Chess Champion and the youngest in history, breaking Garry Kasparov’s record, who won the title at 22 in 1985.

Gukesh is now the second Indian to win the prestigious title after Viswanathan Anand, who became champion in 2012.

A Moment of Pride

During the trophy presentation on Friday, Gukesh handed the championship trophy to his parents, Dr. Rajeevkanant and Padma. His mother kissed the trophy, marking a heartfelt family moment.

Reflecting on His Victory

Recalling his decisive win, Gukesh said, “I was playing for a draw when I saw that Liren made a blunder. That moment changed everything, and I got super-excited.” He described how he capitalized on Liren’s error, leading to the victory.

Inspired by Legends

Gukesh expressed his admiration for Viswanathan Anand, calling him his biggest inspiration. “I will do my best to carry forward Vishi Sir’s legacy,” he said. Gukesh also praised Ding Liren for his resilience during the match, noting that his fighting spirit was inspiring even in defeat.

A Message for Young Chess Players

Gukesh encouraged young chess enthusiasts to focus on enjoying the game. “I’ve always loved playing chess, and my message to the next generation is simple—enjoy every moment of it,” he said.

Gukesh has already built an impressive resume, winning the FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament at 17, where he became the youngest-ever winner. He also played a key role in Team India’s victory at the Chess Olympiad this year.

Prize Money and Recognition

For his historic win, Gukesh received a prize of ₹11.45 crores, while runner-up Ding Liren earned ₹9.75 crores.
