In a world where courage and determination can defy any obstacle, 17-year-old Rhythm Sharma from Bareilly has proved that nothing is impossible. Despite being deaf and mute, Rhythm’s incredible achievements in athletics have echoed across the nation, earning her widespread admiration and pride.
Competing in the 10th Asian Pacific Deaf Athletics Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Rhythm clinched two gold medals and a silver, showcasing her unrelenting spirit. On Thursday, she triumphed in the 400-meter mixed relay and the 4×400-meter relay, adding a silver medal in the 400-meter hurdles the following day.
A Journey Rooted in Determination
Rhythm, who hails from Bara Bazar in Bareilly, has faced numerous challenges on her path to success. Her journey began at the age of 12 when she decided to pursue athletics despite being deaf and mute. When her first coach declined to train her due to her disabilities, she turned to Ajay Kashyap, a coach at the Railway Stadium. With his guidance and support, Rhythm’s talent began to shine.
Her mother, Poonam Sharma, a housewife, and her father, Anukam Sharma, who works in a private job, have been instrumental in her journey. They encouraged her to continue practicing even after setbacks, such as missing the World Deaf Athletics Competition in Brazil due to unforeseen challenges.
Building a Legacy of Medals
Rhythm’s achievements extend beyond the recent championship in Malaysia. She previously won three medals in the 200-meter race, 100-meter, and 400-meter hurdles at the 35th National Athletics Championship in Indore. Her consistent performances have now earned her a spot in the upcoming World Deaf Athletics Competition, with the possibility of representing India in the prestigious Deaflympics.
Rhythm’s ability to lip-read has also been a key factor in her journey, enabling her to overcome communication barriers and excel in athletics.
Recognition and Awards
In recognition of her outstanding achievements, Rhythm was recently honored in absentia at the Veerangna Samman Samaroh under Mission Shakti Phase-5. District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar presented her representative with a cash prize of ₹20,000 and a citation.
The event also celebrated other exceptional talents, such as Priyanshi, a chess champion, and Riya Gangwar, a district topper in Class 12.
Looking Ahead
Rhythm’s story is a powerful reminder that perseverance and hard work can overcome any adversity. As she prepares for the World Deaf Athletics Competition, the nation eagerly awaits her continued success on the global stage.
With her remarkable achievements, Rhythm Sharma has not only brought glory to India but has also inspired countless others to believe in their dreams, regardless of the challenges they face.
