Virat Kohli Set to Create History in Third Test Against Australia

A Century Away from Unique Record

Virat Kohli is on the verge of achieving a remarkable milestone in the third Test against Australia. With this match, he will become only the second player in cricket history to play 100 international matches against the Australian team, joining Sachin Tendulkar, who played 110 matches against the Kangaroos.

In his 99 matches against Australia so far, Kohli has scored 17 centuries and been named Player of the Match nine times. If he scores a century in Brisbane during the third Test, he will become the first player to score a century in all seven major cricket cities of Australia. Brisbane’s Gabba is the only venue where he hasn’t yet reached the three-figure mark.

Kohli’s Record Against Australia

Kohli has played 27 Tests, 49 ODIs, and 23 T20s against Australia, scored over 5,326 runs at an average above 50. Out of his 17 centuries, 10 were scored on Australian soil.

Success with Team India

Kohli has been a key figure in India’s success against Australia. Under his presence, India has won 47% of their matches across formats, including 10 Tests, 21 ODIs, and 15 T20s.

Kohli has scored centuries in six of Australia’s seven cricket cities, including five in Adelaide—the most by any foreign player. He has two centuries each in Melbourne and Perth, and one each in Sydney, Hobart, and Canberra.

Leading India to Historic Wins

Kohli made history as captain in 2018 when he led India to its first-ever Test series victory in Australia, defeating the hosts 2-1. India repeated the feat in 2021 under Ajinkya Rahane. Now, as part of Rohit Sharma’s team, Kohli has the chance to win a third consecutive Test series in Australia.

Kohli has faced Australia more times than any other team in his career. After Australia, his most matches have been against England, followed by Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa, and New Zealand.

Chasing Sachin’s Records

Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most centuries against Australia with 20 in 110 matches. Kohli, with 17 centuries, is closing in on that mark. If Kohli scores four more centuries, he will surpass Tendulkar as the player with the most centuries against a single opponent.

Joining an Elite Club

By playing his 100th match against Australia, Kohli will become only the fourth player to achieve this milestone against a single team. Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, and Mahela Jayawardene are the other three, having achieved the feat against two teams each.

Virat Kohli’s brilliance and consistency continue to shine, and the third Test could be another historic chapter in his illustrious career.
